Archbishop Ussher's Saturday

ARCHBISHOP USSHER’S SATURDAY

It will become six o’clock in the evening. When it starts. And it will become a Saturday. Saturday the twenty-second of October to be precise. 4004 BC. That’s what it’ll become. And it’ll be no ordinary Saturday night. This will be a Saturday night beyond all Saturday nights. There’s never going to be another Saturday night quite like this one.

Picture it.

Nothing.

Literally – not a thing.

No Thing.

Nothing.

Nothing but God.

No atoms no quasars no quarks no dark matter no damn thing. Nothing but God. In a mood to do something just a bit creative. Ready to put together a Something, but a Something that will never  can never - be understood. That’s the brief God sets Godself.

God doesn’t talk it over with anyone first because there isn’t anyone. There’s just Nothing. Only God. God and an infinite amount of Nothing.

God wonders what sort of Stuff would be needed. To make a Something. A Something that would be ready to go. To go and go and go. To become. It’d have to be pretty special Stuff.

So God assembles an almighty amount of Energy. Nothing else. Just Energy. Packs it together tightly.

God also has no idea how long this Becoming is going to take because Time doesn’t exist. Not yet. God is still wrestling with the idea of Time. Past Present Future. Up until now there’s only been Now.

So it’ll take what it takes. But God does know that the Something will never be understood because if it was understood by any new Thing that arrived then that Thing would be equal to God and God had already decided there had to be some Rules or the whole Something would be riddled with Luck and Uncertainty and then it’d just be Chaos.

So the first Rule was that God could be the only God. And fair enough. It would be God’s Something after all.

The second Rule was that if any Thing actually evolved out of the Something, it would only go on evolving if it was the best Thing around at the time. Which meant that the lesser Things would have to fade away.

That’s all.

Two Rules.

Two Rules should do it.

The Something will generate the rest of the Rules. As needed. But only if the Something recognises what the Something is and attains a sense of self-comprehension.

Then God hit ON, and away it went...
